Content and cognitive science

چکیده
The computer model of the mind has informed and guided debate in the cognitive sciences for over 40 years, and gives pride of place to symbols. In this paper I investigate the nature of computational symbols and show that even in the parade cases of symbolic computation, symbols are not doing all the semantic and computational work. This analysis has important consequences for the scope of cognitive science, particularly with regard to what constitutes its domain: cognition. # 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
